PLOTINUS' ASCENT TO THE ETERNAL ONE

Flanked by two daimones, Plotinus ascends from the sensible world, through the World Soul, toward the Nous(/forms), ——->and even beyond to the One.
These days it sure seems like maybe the Gnostics were on to something with this dense, disordered, and evil world, where the only hope is escaping reality somehow. Plotinus’ (version of the Neoplatonic) view of reality offered a different conception, one whose aim is transcendence but not rejection. This world, however fractured, still bears the traces of a higher unity and the reflections of the sublime.

Four animals symbolize the stages of the soul’s ascent: rabbit- sensation and instinct, dog- loyalty and moral discipline, owl- contemplative intellect, dove- unity/purified soul.
