LOKI DECIEVES IÐUNN

This myth follows the strange logic of dreams to tell a sacred loss story, like Persephone’s descent, Sophia’s fall, the Grail’s disappearance, and Adam and Eve’s expulsion from Eden.
Loki is coerced by the jotun Þjazi into luring Iðunn, keeper of the gods’ apples of youth, beyond the safety of Ásgarðr. Þjazi abducts her, and without her apples (anima, renewal, divine vitality) the gods begin to quickly grow old. Loki (trickster, disruption, transformation) is both the cause of the crisis and the force that resolves it. Þjazi (primordial chaos, winter, the devouring force) steals away Iðunn and her apples. Ásgarðr (the ordered sacred center) is thrown into decline when its source of renewal is removed.
In the end, Loki, who brought about the crisis, is also the one who restores what was lost, revealing the paradoxical, mercurial nature of the trickster- the force that disrupts order can also become the agent of its renewal.
