DIONYSIAN & APPOLONIAN DAEMONS
~Where Contrary Affections Bear Their Sway, Give Each Its Due, Yet Let None Lead Astray~
In the Phaedrus, Plato describes forms of divine mania: the Apollonian, which grants prophetic clarity, measure, and vision; and the Dionysian, which manifests as ritual ecstasy, purification, and the dissolution of ordinary selfhood.
Nietzsche later expands upon this polarity in “The Birth of Tragedy,, describing the Apollonian as a force of form, restraint, and lucid appearance, “the calm of the sculptor-god,” and the Dionysian as an ecstatic power that breaks down boundaries, reconciling humanity with nature and with itself.
Where Apollonian art soothes through image and individuation, Dionysian art overwhelms, carrying the individual back into the deeper, shrouded currents of reality.
